A few days ago I wrote that I had found a split hose behind the fuel filler that I figured would allow me to pass the evap test I had failed last week. But when I went back they said I still failed the test, slightly above the max for what is the allowed level of leakage I guess. There were no numbers on the report. They said I needed a smoke test to find the leak, and the place next door could do it for me. I scheduled an appointment with them for the next day for the $70 test, but I canceled that when I found that I could qualify for a program to "retire" my car for $1000 for failing the test.
The reading I did said that with certain exceptions that didn't apply to my car, all pre-ODB II cars required this pressurized nitrogen evap test. But today I got a call from the smog test shop saying that they looked into it and found that my car doesn't need the evap test so I can bring it back and they will pass it. They didn't say why I don't need it.
Something seems fishy about this - I was suspicious from the beginning that they might be going to extra lengths to throw a little business to the shop next door, with whom they are obviously tight with. Now I wonder if the phone call was because they were nervous about having another shop find that there is in fact no leak in my evap system. I may seem paranoid, but I've been scammed by a smog shop before who tried to tell me a check engine light came on when it was on the dyno - when I knew that my car isn't even tested on a dyno due to TCS.
Anyone else in California know about the evap test? Is it required for a '93 9000?
Still considering taking the $1000 since I don't think I could sell it for more than that.
