I'd also be surprised if 1 year old gas is that bad.
I had a leak in the bottom of my tank last year, and I had to drain it to patch the crack in the plastic. I bought a cheapo plastic hand pump from an autoparts store, but I couldn't get the tube down into the tank through the filler neck. I had to remove the connection at the bottom of the filler neck where it mates to the tank itself and go in from there. You can't get all of the gas out due to the shape of the tank, but I got most of it. I looked at the fuel pump on top and decided that I'd probably break something taking that apart. It would have taken a lot of cleaning too as it was filthy.
