a shocking puddle!

Upon backing 94 Aero (260k 5 speed) out of garage, I happened to spot an oily puddle on floor, about 4-6 ounces, underneath RR wheel area.
Thinking the worst, i.e., brake line broken or rusted, I opened hood to verify fluid levels. All were OK. Underneath car I found the Shock Absorber had sprung the leak.
Just thought I would post for others info. The shocks are the Yellow Bilsteins. Been on car for years-at least 5 or six, maybe more. Once I got my rubber control arm bushings replaced I have discovered I love these shocks on all four corners. Firm yes, but they really make the car.
My theory as to why sudden oil dump:
Obviously the seal failed. Possibly due to sand/grit from winter driving?
The dust cover had slipped down a year or two ago, due to heavy rust on retaining ring that holds cover in place.
Previously car had lived in Boston (SALT CITY)and owners were far from vigilant regarding undercarriage cleaning. Previously I had tried to tie wrap it in place (to no avail).
I don't tow or carry much weight in car, so doubt it has to due with just usage.
Will just drive and see how things go minus one shock absorber.
Cheers
Weston
