We had owned a 1997 9000CSE with the automatic trans and this trans is very well suited to the 9000 turbos, with smooth shifting and virtually no "hunting" for the right gear as is the case with certain transmissions.
Life expectancy appears to be all over the place, probably dependent upon maintenance (how frequently is the fluid changed and the filter cleaned), and type of driving (avoid the jack rabbit starts I would say). The ATF in these cars is very simple to change, just pull the hex bolt and out comes 3-4 quarts. Also the ATF filter is very easy to access, three metric bolts and the filter comes out quite easily. The filter is a metal screen mesh, so the drill is to pull it and then clean it with some gasoline or other solvent.
Overall based on our experience we would not hesitate to recommend the 9000 autobox, it is totally light years ahead of the Borg Warner unit in the 900s.
