Find the gear selector shaft under the hood, it has a rubber isolator in line - it's near the firewall. There is a good chance that the rubber has separated from one of the steel backing plates, a common problem.
Not to burst your bubble, but if the '93 car has Traction Control System (standard on all US-spec 1993 turbo cars), please do some homework using the search function on "TCS" so you have some idea what you are getting yourself into.
