I admit that I've been wrenching for 40+ years, but it just doesn't seem that hard. I know it can go south in a big way, but that hasn't been my experience. When I last did it last June on my '96 I think it took maybe 45 mins--both pulleys and the belt. Tensioner was still OK. The hardest part for me is getting the routing right, as I have the spatial skills of a large rock. I need a diagram or photo to get it right.
Removing the fender trim and wheel well liner is awkward but not hard. 8 SS nuts on the trim and half a dozen (often gnarly) 10mm bolts on the liner. Maybe 10-15 minutes on each end of the job, working carefully.
The tool for holding the tensioner is really the only tricky part, but there are a number of options for making one.
Dealing with the left-handed bolt is well-documented. Hopefully it hasn't been overtorqued!
The problems seem to come when the last guy to work on the car didn't know what he was doing.
Of course you're both right, it's the other stuff in there that's harder to do, like seals, crank pulley, etc., but I'm just talking about the serp belt and pulleys.
FWIW, I think it's harder to do on something like a Ford Exploder where you have to route the belt mostly by feel, or on a OG 9-3 if you don't take the wheel well liner off.
