Duracool & pinhole leaks...? Hi Marvin.
It's always good to converse with you here !
I read some rave reviews of the Duracool and also some sharply worded criticisms usually followed by the admissions of installing it incorrectly.
Facts as I know them indicate that 134a eats pinholes into aluminium and the HC substitutes do not.
Also some folks have raved about how good Duracool's leak sealer works on those almost impossible to find pinholes.
So - regarding the teeny/slow leaks, what I posted was:
"so I figure a couple(?) of cans of their stuff after using the vac pump and their super-duper leak sealer and I may even be good for a whole summer of real cooling..."
I did try some 134a type sealer some while back (yes, it is a '94 and came with 134a AFAIK) and even after that it only stayed making cool air for a few weeks between needing another can or so to 'top it off'.
So my reasoning is that if the freon-type stuff is corroding the parts and costing me for refills besides, why not use a non-corrosive substitute which runs at a lower pressure, has (good ?) sealer, and costs about the same unless it doesn't hold up ?
Have I gone wrong in my thinking ?
(I do not wish to tear the system apart and I've leak-checked it without any success too.)
I think I read that a 9K w/ R-12 took 39 ounces of it - and if that charge weight is the same for 134a then I can estimate how many cans I need for a full charge with the Duracool.
Your thoughts ?
Best Wishes.
