shorting out the circuit and illuminating the warning light. This is hidden by the protective plastic tube around the wires - the wiring looks like a 50+ year old rotten electrical zip cord, they must have used a derivative of Bakelite for the insulation!
After mine shorted out, I repaired it with some heat shrink tubing and silicon RTV goo, has been fine for years. Alternative is a $51 part from Eeuroparts or a used part from a junkyard.
