It appears turning the cylinder head bolts an extra 90 degrees is used to assure the bolts are stretched to yield. The yield area of the bolt gives a relatively constant tension on the bolt. When performing the 90 degree turn, the yielding of the bolt can be felt as a fairly steady torque. First the torque required to turn the bolt increases, then levels out as the bolt yields. In most cases yield occurs somewhere in the first 1/2 of the 90 turn. So why turn the bolt much past the initial yield point?
