With an aging engine.. Pretty Well ALL of ours given their ages.
the primary cause of oil degradation is from combustion bits, getting past rings and into the oil. Which is why the oil turns Black.
Once there these wee bits are a fairly efficient grinding compound. Wear then accelerates significantly.
Moderne oils are Far more durable than they were, even when our Saabs were new. Oils are in No danger of wearing out their additive packages unless past a 10k change interval and some would argue even that.
Contamination is the Real issue. Consequently, IMO, It's clever to Double up the oil filter change regime, as in at the halfway point of the oil change interval as well at each oil change.
Cheaper than oil and given the Religious Fervour often evidenced over Oil Brands this should be a no brainer :-)
