It's a telescopic tube with a spring, oil is there as lube.
It should compress smoothly. Try a Compression tool.
The strong arm/lever method is just asking for unwanted trouble IMO.
The Turnbuckle is a rudimentary one.. Might even work well if used with care.
If willing you can DIY a decent tool.. Search the forum.
