I was cleaning up this car some today and replaced the plugs with a fresh set of the proper NGKs. They old ones were very degraded and blackened. Started the car and noticed 3 different things.
First the idle increased to about 1300 rpms and stayed there - it had been idling around 850 yesterday, and occassionally stuttered back to about 700. Mayve it has a bad vacuum line, or ??
Second thing was that the smoke began almost immediately and was consistent and more severe than yesterday. I'd be ashamed to drive it around he neighborhood in this condition. Looking more carefully, it was not really blue smoke, and also not really white - almost like what you would see on a cold morning, but a very heavy flow. No obvious smell of coolant though.
Third thing I noticed that there was some steam or coolant leaking right where the exhaust manifold meets the top of the turbo - not severe but kind of a small bubbling that stopped after a few minutes.
Other things - no oil obvious in cooland reservoir, and no coolant in the oil.
So now I'm not sure if I have a turbo issue or a head gasket problem. Is there a definite way to tell?
Thanks to you all - your responses are very helpful.
