Don't need to remove timing cover to simply replace a timing chain.
As digression, likely only of interest/curiousity value.
OEM Cam drive setups, factory fresh even, have been measured as up to 10 degrees OFF designed timings. Additive tolerance errors.
Not an atypical variance for an engine mfg'd 15 or more years ago.
Add in a wee bit of chain and sprocket wear and the differences can grow significantly. Doesn't need to be a tooth 'out' before there's at least a drivability issue resulting.
Judiciously used Verniers can correct this IF the mech knows their purpose :-) Never heard mention of those being available for a Saab though.. dunno.
Wouldn't think a HG failure would result from a valve timings issue unless the cyl temps were affected by retarded action.
