The trans is heavy and can be a handfull to manipulate into exact position..
I find that If I can't get it in on the first try, I have to deburr the input shaft splines , as they can/do get a burr on them from a failed insertion and Will not go in reasonably until that's done.
Ohhh.. as for the alignment tool goes. Just find a long socket the fit's snugly inside the clutch disc splines..then tighten up the pressure plate bolts with it in place (making sure you have means to remove it like an extension taped on). Cheap, easy, everybody has one :-) and effective.
