Had this problem. Seals in the master were old and shrinking from the cold weather. Depress the clutch and listen for a squirting sound at the master, where the plunger meets the body - that's a pretty clear indication that at least some fluid is leaking past the seal. You won't necessarily notice fluid loss right away, and it might take a while before enough air leaks past the seals and contaminates the fluid. But when it does, suddenly you have no clutch.
Damage to be done by driving with a bad master (firsthand experience):
1. Clogged hydraulic line or slave cylinder from MC seal particulates (if that happens, try a reverse bleed)
2. Fluid seepage into the pedal area, resulting in an annoying and routine expense
3. Discoloration of your shoes, the floor mat, and anything you walk on before you notice the puddle (hydraulic fluid is very corrosive)
If you end up replacing the master and live in or near Chicago, you can use my Motiv power bleeder. Brilliant tool.
Also, if you're considering the rebuild kit, pull the master first, remove the plunger, and inspect the cylinder walls for scoring and pitting. If either exist, or the master is effed in some other way, fluid will leak past the new seals as well.
