Consensus seems to be:
1. Spray some lubricant first.
2. Pull straight up, only from the point directly over the entry point.
I would add that you could turn it back and forth SLIGHTLY while pulling up, provided you don't apply pressure to the horizontal piece of the elbow. This would help distribute the lubricant.
I've taken out four of these, but didn't really make much effort to not break them, and thus broke one. In retrospect, it definitely would have been worth being more careful.
