Rear ABS sensor rusted in place Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 12:33:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '97 CSE has had the ABS light on since buying the car last year. I finally determined that the problem is a bad left rear sensor.
I tried to see if a temporary cable repair was possible but even a couple of inches from the sensor there is still no continuity, so it appears to be totally shot.
The problem of course is that this is a rust-belt car. The old sensor does not want to budge at all. (I managed to snap off the 10mm bolt that holds it in and will need to deal with that as well.) Tried to soak everything in penetrating oil for a while, then took a vice grip to try moving the sensor around but it won't budge. I thought of trying to bang it out from the outside but it looks like the hub has to come off for that and I didn't want to get too deep into unknown territory.
Anyone have a good strategy for dealing with this? Heat? A big hammer? Since the sensor is dead I don't have to worry about damaging it, but having already snapped off one bolt I don't want any more collateral damage if it can be helped.
