I got a hold of a fuel pressure gauge and while cranking, it read 8 psi. Its supposed to be 45 for the walbro pump, so there's the answer. Now I did notice that as the engine was cranking the fuel pressure slowly crept up, and the check valve in the line retains fuel pressure while the engine is off. That preserved pressure in the line must have been enough to allow the car to start and run 'til the line ran dry while the fuel pump fuse was unplugged. It baffles me that the car would start and run without the fuel pump running. I can't figure out why it wouldn't even idle with the fuel pump running. Weird symptoms sure make the diagnosis tricky, that said, I hope a faulty fuel pump is my only issue.
