The real problem with the Radio Shack iron is lack of heating capacity. Once you've filed a tip, it's pretty much ruined, because you've filed off the protective outer layer. You need to use a solder tip cleaner. Also, you may not be aware that you shouldn't clean the solder off the tip when you're done soldering. You need to leave a healthy amount of solder on there, which will protect the tip from oxidation and corrosion.
