Water Leak Fix Posted by Santo [Email] (#66) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Santo) on Tue, 22 May 2012 15:02:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 1990 5-door had water dripping near the rear speakers. The water was exiting from the two 4x2" plastic covers that allow access to the hatch wiring. They are located directly below the two flexible plastic wire conduits that extend from the car body to the hatch. The inside surface of these covers was coated with a whiteish sticky sealant. I believe this goo had dripped down from the two seams were the rear quarter panels meet the roof pan.
The seams are covered by an assembly that encludes a 9.25"L painted aluminum trim piece, a rubber gasket (9269713 left& 9269705 right) and two plastic clips. The gaskets are not ment to keep water out of the seams and the clips engage two slots along the seam that that I believe should be sealed by that white goo.
The trim assembly is held in place by a dab of trim adhesive at each end of the piece. On my 22 year old car the assemblies were easily freed by gently prying up each end and breaking the bonds. The assembly is removed by gently walking it toward you as you stand aside the car facing the piece. If you lift straight up you will probably break or detach the clips.
I resealed the seams and clip slots with 3M#08551 clear sealant and attached the assemblies with 3M#08008 trim adhesive. We've had some heavy rains the last couple of days and not a drop got into the car. You may also want to seal around where the two flexible wire conduits attach to the body. I have read in other posts that this can also be a point of water entry.
