Congratulations on repairing the valve, I've tried several times, and one thing or other foiled it. Problems center around the coils, bobbins distortion or melting, and wear in the cylindrical coil retainer - disc enclosure. Bobbins distort from coil heat, either the coil shorts (intermittently or permanently) causing excessive current and heat, or the coil is energized a high percentage of the time from higher than stock boost or other issues. Discs sticking to coil bobbins is an indication of a hot coil with a heat softened bobbin.
The coil disc and cylinder normally wear, the original new valves, that came with the cars, would go 50K+ miles. Some of the later OEM replacement valves would not last a week or two. This is a high performance valve, which depends on proper tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes for it operate for a reasonable length of time.
Broken discs are caused by the disc catching in worn or out of tolerance slots in the cylindrical retainer. Once the slot is worn – damaged a new disc will catch in the slot and not operate for long.
Fred, it looks like making the disc smaller in diameter would allow it to enter and catch in the slots more readily. Some of the later valves appeared to have slots that were too long, allowing the disc to prematurely catch in them. This is a big reason to use a later type valve in the conversion kit.
