97 overheat, EDU problem - conclusion

After jumping the low and high speed cooling fan relays in the engine compt indicating a working fan/resistor at both speeds, and reading that the EDU unit controls fan operation, I spent half the day Friday replacing the EDU unit. The EDU unit is mounted under the speedometer/tach with 4 small torx bolts. I bought it salvage and car now works fine with fan coming on and off correctly. Some items of note for anyone dealing with this……
- The fan unit with resistor is a tough unit operating next to the
hot turbo (15 yrs so far in my 97CS)
- When in doubt change the low speed relay, they are cheap
- Buy the EDU unit salvage, I’ve seen it new somewhere recently for
$700
- EDU units are different manual vs. automatic
Most important, when your fuel and temp guages repeatedly fail for brief periods your car is telling yu something, likely a bad EDU :-)
