In 1995 and later, at lease on the 9000s I have owned- a 95 aero and a 97 CSE - the positive battery post was closer to firewall, as opposed to being closer to radiator.
In the earlier cars, my 92 and my 94, the positive terminal with red cable was out front.
Maybe in the interest of safety? keeping the ground out front, and putting the potential dangerous positive post more concealed? not sure.
This would explain different cable configurations for the two different battery layouts.
If memory serves I think on some batteries, you can rotate them and the cables will still be long enough, but barely. But cables seem to have both starter motor and other fused circuits fed from them, so it is more difficult to use incorrect cable.
