93 9000 CSE - still stumbling under load/hard pedal

car starts up fine and idles smooth at just under 1000rpm, with occasional slight stumble. if i press the pedal down hard and fast, it stumbles and runs rough until smoothing out over 3000rpm. if i let it down slowly it runs smooth back to 1000rpm. if i press the pedal very slowly from idle, it will run smooth all the way up to red line.
so, the issue seems confined to a quick hard press of the pedal, which causes it to hesitate, bog, stumble, whatever you call it and then it doesn't recover until after 3000rpm, or it behaves this way when i try to drive the car at anything more than idle (like backing up in the driveway).
i swapped DI cassettes without change. I swapped in a spare AMM and it actually got slightly worse (I had two good AMMs, but one produced a smoother idle, so I use that one), so I don't think both AMMs suddenly failed.
haven't seen any vaccuum leaks. any ideas on what might cause the stumble under a hard gas pedal, or load, but still start fine and run smooth when parked and pedalled lightly?
i'm actually contemplating taking it to a mechanic for the first time in 6 years.
thanks,aaron
