leak at small O-Ring after water pump replacement

Oh, O-ring woes...hoping for magic words of wisdom here; spent last two weeks working on '95 CS only to put it all back together and discover a bad leak at the water pump where the smallest o-ring is. Pulling it all back apart again, hoping I'll be able to find o-rings locally--but how in the heck do we get this pump re-installed without damaging the o-rings????
Also, does vaseline cause damage to the o-rings, would anyone suggest using something else for lubricant??
Many thanks in advance...
PS--at this point the $500 shop price is looking like cheap money; too bad we can't drive it there to be fixed.
