Look into Motorad and Waxstat thermostats. Waxstat was the original OEM supplier to Saab, then Motorad took over maybe 10 years ago.
I think (you should verify) the Motorad part numbers are:
265-192 89 degree C <----- Go with this in cooler climates
265-180 82 degree C <----- Hot climates but not for anyone afraid of mods.
It is an unusual design with 3 positions. The positions are fully closed, open to both the heater core and the radiator, and open to the radiator only. And you want the vent hole.
Since the T-stat isn't all that easy to reach, you might as well put in a part that works correctly so you don't have to do it over.
