2006 9-5 with 68,000 miles
I have been meaning to post about this....
At my 60,000 mile service I had my trusted indy drain and refill the manual transmission even though it was not required. That was in May. He made a remark that he would put in whatever oil SAAB recommended as he does this so infrequently he didn't recall what should go in. I believe he put in a semi-synthetic or synthetic. He also said he was surprised how dark the oil was that came out.
When the weather turned cold I had the window open as I cruised down the hill from my house and noticed a pronounced high pitched gear whine that I never noticed in the past three years leading up to the fluid change. It quiets down a little if the clutch is pushed in while rolling, but it's still there. Now I hear it all the time even with the windows up and a warmed up car, and I was worried it was a low fluid level. No other problems with the transmission.
Is there any potential long term harm from using semi or full synthetic? Maybe he should use a higher viscosity synthetic?
As an aside, when I had my old 92 C900 I used to syphon out a quart from the transmission dip stick port and refill with the recommended dino oil (can't recall if straight 30 or 10W30) with each engine oil change. That transmission went 215,000 in my hands and the next owner ran it up to 235,000 before I lost contact with him, and that was a transmission that would fail usually around 125,000 miles, pinion bearings, I believe. Yet SAAB said the original fluid was good for "life". Guess its all how long you want it to live, so this is important to me as Dad used to say "oil is cheaper than parts".
Since I'm due for an oil change, I may have him switch it back to regular oil. Can anyone make a recommendation of which one to use?
Thanks
