How old, how many miles? Sounds as if possibly the contacts in the "neutral safety switch" are dirty or worn/arced.
If wiggling it achieves better starting, it would point to that.
I'm not sure where the switch is on these cars and how you'd get to it, but that's where I'd think the trouble lies.
