Aside from leaking oil, that is??
Car is 94 Aero with 290k. I got it at 200k with what I always *thought* were Bilstein HD's, front and rear, because fronts were sealed unit, all painted a bright yellow. The rear Bilsteins (with a readable label) dumped oil unceremoniously at 250k in not a small puddle on floor.
Well, one day the car lost all stability, kind of scary at high speeds and not like it used to handle. I noticed one front strut with oil residue, other side dry.
Swapped in a pair of well used spring/sachs struts off 97 9000 cse in front. The damping response is better(no means great) so I am guessing one or both front struts had failed.
OKay, so upon disassembly the fronts are not Bilstein but BOGE, silver sticker, made in Germany, with a number like 37-XXX.
After removing spring on each, I can compress the shaft into the strut body, and after a minute or two both will slowly extend to full extension. But when manipulating quickly by hand, there are'gurgling' sounds each, and the motion does not seem linear. Even though only one appears to leak oil, are they both shot? Planning on getting new struts anyway, but just curious.
