Not entirely convinced on the efficacy or presence :-) of rear Crumple zones (of which the Toyota clearly had None) An off the wall example would the goofy 'Smart Car' which claims a rigid passenger cage..often scrambling the human eggshell occupants within it's confines.
I once witnessed (in my neighborhood) an T bird rear end a then brand new BMW 3 series,. Seems the Goof BMW occupants had stopped to 'View" a house for sale. By parking in the middle of the road.
The T bird ran into the parked car at ~30 mph. It's front bumper impact 'v' reached to the back of the BMW's front seats.. Easily the equal or worse that the Toyota above.
No fatalities ..surprisingly.. given Fuel was tank ruptured.. with the gasoline everywhere.
The T bird's headlights were unbroken! and still on.
New tech Vs No tech
Luck seemed as a major contributor.
In another local event some Goof Kid in a Civic SI
'T boned' a Crown Victoria Police cruiser (rollcage and all) Instantly killing the Officer. Kid ran off only to be caught days later.
Not too many generations earlier of crappy /tinny 'japanese cars' and the Civic would have been a grease spot on the Crown Vic's door.
Age of design IS very relevant.. along with circumstance.
