5-spd shifter woes Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Fri, 7 Jun 2013 07:45:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The leather on the shifter knob on the Aero had deteriorated and I decided to remove the leather to make it look better. Well, not so fast....underneath it's uglier than a torn leather knob. So I bought a new leather shift knob. I cut the old one off, and installed the new one. During this procedure I inadvertantly rotated the lock-out collar a little bit before installing the new shift knob. The two arrows on the collar are now at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock viewed from above. I believe they were originally at 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock but I'm not positive. Since installing the new knob, when shifting from 4th to 5th, the shifter sometimes overshoots the 5th/Reverse stop and goes into no-man's land somewhere past the 5th/Reverse gate. I would like to get this fixed. I have already resigned myself to cutting off the new leather knob as I gorrila glued it in place.....stupid thing to do. I will try to heat the shifter shaft, if even possible, to try to remove the knob without cutting it off, but I don't think it will work. Can anyone tell me the correct orientation of the reverse lockout collar and whether that would make a difference? Is there something else going on that I am missing. TIA!
