I need people's thoughts;
I've been firmly in the 9000 camp for the past 15 years, I still own 3 of them. 2 are manual transmission Aeros in fairly decent shape(95/97) and one is a 95 auto/turbo CS that is 7k shy of 300,000 miles. What attracts me to these cars is their high speed cruising ability, hatchback utility, rear wiper, wicked acceleration(even the CS has been modified to Aero specs) and better than decent handling. Oh, and I'm a heavy DIY guy who owns a Tech II and has converted a manual tranny 9000 to an auto for my wife.
Unfortunately, as much as I would love to see the CS odometer tick over 300,000 miles, I don't think I've got either the energy or the enthusiasm to help it eek out those final 7k. Too many little issues to mention. They're all fixable, I'm just not feeling the love.
Here's the dilemma: my wife can no longer drive a stick. I'm toying with the idea of converting the non TCS aero to an auto, but, doing this conversion a second time doesn't strike me as being anywhere near as much fun as it was the first time. In addition there are possible engine issues looming on the horizon. And I think about the things I tolerate but don't like about these cars: the marginal AC, less than stellar gas mileage, aging electronics, and the fact that it's really difficult to find decent replacement front spoilers for the Aeros. Plus, should I really bastardize a manual rust free Aero when so many are now heading to the crusher?
So, would a 2000-2002 9-3 make a viable replacement?(cause it's a hatchback and has a rear wiper). Or should I just look at 2003 and up 9-3s because they're newer, better, and I could probably find a wagon for not much money? I'd even think about a Sedan in a pinch, but I sure would miss the hatchback and the rear wiper.
A couple of other thoughts. I've never liked the way 9-5s look(can't explain it so I won't even try). I think 9-2s are cute but don't have power seats, I imagine body parts are hard to source, and I have my qualms about that generation Subaru engine.
I'm probably gonna post this on both 9-3 boards as well, just thought I'd start here first.
