I've been a lucky one twice in my Saab years -- woohoo! But it's not fair to say that "the" weak spot in these is the gov seals -- if only! The most common failure for these was burnt clutches for forward gears, leaving only reverse in many cases, or no movement whatsoever. Very expensive fix, usually cheapest to just replace the whole transmission in those cases.
Then there are the accumulator springs. And brake bands. And those are just the things I know about.
ZF transmissions weren't that rare even in 9000 days. They were used in many other brands too -- I think BMW for instance. And they also had history in the heavy equipment industry.
