Another angle to consider is that occasionally the timing cover itself (into which the oil pump is mounted) can become scored, in the rare occasion that a bit of grit gets inhaled into the oil pump. The grit, getting trapped between the oil pump gears and the timing cover, scores the timing cover.
When that happens, the oil pump cannot develop sufficient vacuum and thus oil pressure remains low. So replacing the oil pump won't cure the problem. However, this was typically not an issue with the 9000s; a frequent problem with the "improved" engine in newer models.
And, if it were an issue in your case, you would have (most likely) experienced a flickering oil light at idle.
Nevertheless, it might be worth a look at the inside of the timing cover to see if you notice scoring around the oil pump gears.
I've had to replace a timing cover in the past as a result of broken chains causing this scoring at the time of failure. But without that kind of event, it's hard to believe this would be your culprit in a 9000. Later models had this happen fairly regularly owing to bits of sludge and coke breaking free from the clogged up oil pickups they came standard with from the factory (just kidding...sort of). So it'd be interesting to see what you'd find by looking at it, if you break the engine down that far.
Sorry...a bit of a rambling post. Just meant to offer a different angle to consider.
