94 Aero 5-speed. 170K
The other day on my home from work I approached an intersection and pushed in the clutch, pushed the gear shift up into neutral, let out the clutch and coasted. After a couple seconds, the engine bucked and the car jumped into 4th gear with no input from me. For the remainder of my drive home, it would not come out of 4th gear although the gear shift would go up into neutral or wherever. I made it home with some high-rev'd starts, and when I checked, my shifter linkage was loose (where the tapered rod attaches). I got everything tightened back up and went to put the car in reverse and started to let the clutch out only to find the car wanted to go forward....in 4th. After trying all the gears, something finally "popped" and I was back in neutral. I was able to take the car for a drive and everything worked fine, except once it felt like it tried to go back into 4th again on its own.
Anyone ever experienced this?
Secondly, has anyone put a spot-weld on that area where the shifter attaches to the input rod on the tranny? That tapered-pin design sucks in my opinion.
