Coolant Temp Sensor Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 30 Sep 2013 14:32:47 In Reply to: Idle issue, Tony G, Mon, 30 Sep 2013 11:59:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There are two Coolant Temperature Sensors (CTS) on four cylinder 9000s:
1. One for the Engine Control Unit - located on cylinder head between intake runners for cylinders 2 and 3.
2. Another for the temperature gauge (and in the later cars the radiator fan control) - is screwed into the end of the cylinder head near the transmission.
I would suspect #1 and had a very similar failure to what you are experiencing: my car would warm up and the idle would be OK, then all of a sudden it would jump up to 1100+ RPM for no reason. Cleaning the AIC didn't fix this, and the sensor would give proper resistance measurements per temperature chart - when it would give ANY reading, which was the key to the solution. Replaced the sensor and idle has been fine since.
