Possible explanations:
1. Perhaps the "nearly worn out tires" are improving your mileage - less rolling resistance and more rotations vs. actual forward movement?
2. If your usual gasoline is 10% ethanol and you change to a gasoline with less ethanol, your mileage will also improve.
3. "Summer" gasoline is a different mix than "winter" gasoline with some additives to reduce evaporation and limit vapor lock.
My best recorded mileage runs have been in the winter running Wisconsin gasoline (no ethanol) despite running snow tires.
