It's hard to tell what to do.
I can't say for sure what's going on. It is just a guess based on the worn oil pump picture.
If the 9000 engine had the same problems as the others from that same era I can't say since I haven't seen one myself.
The early 9000 B234 had problems with the big lower balance shaft sprocket.
So far by some coincidence I have only seen balance sprocket problems with the non turbo 900 engine around 95-97. Why that is I have no clue since I'm pretty sure they did not use a different hardening process for the sprockets between the NG900 non turbo/turbo engine and the one in the 9000.
It is just about impossible to get a glimpse of the balance shaft sprockets teeth from above after removing valve cover so I can't suggest that either if you want to rule out things. Removing the timing cover is also quite an undertaking.
Since you are in there at the oil pump you should also remove the pressure reducer valve and check for scoring.
It might also show some signs and be binding in the bore.
