How'd he break it, why won't it open from inside?

Before or while you install a new handle (you can swap the lock cylinder over from yours, by the way). you'll need to figure out why it won't open either from inside or out.
I myself have an outside handle that refuses to open the door, but will if door is only pushed to partly catch. Until it warms up I try on parking to only close door part way,to first click, or I open passenger side, lean across and open driver door from inside. Inside, in my case, works fine.
If it weren't almost as cold here in Maine as your neck of the woods, I'd have investigated and fixed my problem, and then I could offer you some advice in case yours has same trouble as mine. I'm thinking, the cast zinc arm off the back of things that triggers the latch works may be broken or loose, or maybe I'll need to do some serious lubing and linkage checking.
I DO happen to have a set of both front outside handles, as well as the ignition key cylinder and trunk latch cylinder with keys to fit, from a now-crushed former 9000. But only one, none to share, sorry.
When you get a new handle you may need to do some searches on this site to pick up tips on opening the door and installing it. Trick removing the tongue on the mirror-switch toggle, that hides the latch tongue holding switch on over one fastening screw, plus location of all fasteners, punching up hard on bottom of inner panel with window down to release inner panel at window edge once all fasteners removed, cutting through the gooey urethane that holds the inner door liner to the door tin, unplugging and routing wires that lead to the lock cylinder, and disconnecting and reconnecting the little poppet-ball link between the back of the lock cylinder and the latch works, all are things better tackled pre-armed with knowledge.
Good luck. Any indy Saab shops nearby?
