Running the compressor dry will damage it, but there is a pressure cutoff switch in the system that is supposed to prevent that. As a quick test, if you remove the belt you should be able to turn the compressor smoothly by hand. (Turn the part inside the pulley.)
If the compressor has failed that usually means that shrapnel has been blown into the system and you'd have to replace at a minimum the drier, expansion valve, and condenser; and flush out the rest of the system.
There is a short belt available, I keep one in my car "just in case," if you search for it here you'll find a suitable belt. (I'm pretty sure it's one that fits a 2nd-gen 900 or 1st-gen 9-3.)
