9000 Timing question - off by a link?

I tackled my first headgasket job. Not doing the timing chain as extension was within spec. However, upon reassembly, I (for all practical purposes) screwed up my timing marks on my chain, so I'm trying to get my timing correct.
I lined up the crank pulley at TDC using the cutout on the pulley and the mark on the block. Next, I installed the chain on the exhuast-side sproket, and then counted my 16 links/15 rollers and installed the intake side. The question is, how exact should the marks on the top of the camshafts line up? When i turn the engine over with the crank pulley, the marks on the top of the camshafts are just slightly leaning toward the intake side of the mark. It seems like with some of the slack at TDC, you could be half a link off one way or another without a definitive answer due to the inaccuracy of the timing marks.
So the big question is - if I AM half a link off, will I do damage upon starting the engine, or will it just run like garbage and I'll have to pull the valve cover and re-adjust?
Thanks for any input. I spent waaaay to much time checking/double checking this on assembly and then provided to screw up my markings. Aargh! :)
