I vote for this^^^^
The little hose in the wheel well gets rotten and breaks. Hose fills full of sand and road grit and plugs the hose. Fuel pump collapses the tank. If you can't fix it right away, just open and close the gas cap before you go anywhere. You could get by for a little while but you have to unplug the nipple and replace the hose if it's broken. Reach up in the wheel well under the gas filler and see if the hose is connected to the nipple. You can see it if you look up there. This is much more likely than varnish unless you run the crappiest gas on earth. Easy fix...DIY. Don't panic if some crap goes down the filler neck. It'll settle out somewhere or will end up in your fuel filter.
It would be a good idea to fix it soon, though. Collapsing the tank can have negative effects on you gas gauge float arm and circuit card in the fuel pump assembly. I have a broken on in the garage from such an incident.
