I went thru this last year with my 97 with 140k miles, you can look back at my post and responses. I thought I could take it apart and lube it, but at disassembly found that the brushes were severely worn and in general just appeared beat. So I bit the bullet and bought the oem reconditioned from eeuro and with hindsight consider it $$$ well spent.
Fyi I was toying with the idea of getting a used one from a later 900/9-3 at junkyard but ran out of patience/time.
