I think the fundamental question is not too complicated. Assuming there's nothing wrong with the starter you put in, it should crank the engine from a good battery with good positive and negative cables and a reasonably large jumper wire direct from battery to solenoid. Have you tried turning the engine by hand to see if it's bound up? This will also put the starter pinion on another chunk of the ring gear.
