Do not fear the 0W40. At normal operating temp (about 100° C) a 0W40 will be the same viscosity as a 10W40.
When the engine is cold both the 0W40 and the 10W40 are too thick to flow well and protect the engine. Of the two the 0W40 flows better when cold, and that is a good thing.
So why didn't Saab recommend a 0W40 SH or SG oil for the 9000? I can't say with certainty, but I doubt that synthetic base stocks existed at the time that were thin enough to make a 0Wxx oil.
Take the following with a few grains of salt because the B234 and B235 engines are not the same. Saab made changes to the B234 and renamed the result the B235. This is the engine in many 9-5 cars. If you go online and download 9-5 owner manuals you'll see that Saab approved 0W40 synthetic for the B235 engine every year from 2000 to 2008. In 2002 and 2003 they actually recommended synthetic 0W40 and 0W50 for extreme driving conditions. All of this is a weak point relative to the fact that 0W40 flows better than 10W40 during warmup, and warmup is when most engine wear occurs.
The article linked below explains this better (scroll down to the end of the article) and also provides HTSH numbers of about a dozen oils.
