I went out today to set my engine back in time, and try to find out why it would have went out of time in the process.

I spun the cams so the pointers lined up, spun the crank to tdc, and
then looked at the camshaft sprockets. The timing mark that is supposed to point straight up on both of them (so you can count the links between and to line up with the orange links on new chains) was correct on the exhaust cam, but not on the intake cam. the timing mark on the intake camshaft was right before having to adjust the exhaust cam to point right. So I took off the sprockets and turned them over.

There it was! The woodruff key on the intake sprocket that kept it located on the camshaft was sheared off. So, I assume that when my engine fired its last time the exhaust cam rotated, shearing off the key on the intake sprocket, then the chain and tensioner caught again, keeping the exhaust valves open so that there was no compression when the intake valves close.

Lesson learned: Camshaft sprockets are wear parts, just like the chain
and tensioner. Replace them ALL as a set. I have spare sprockets from another head, so I am having a friend overnight them to me and maybe tuesday or wednesday (with the holiday weekend) I can let you know what it sounds like. I have heard of cupped teeth, but I didn't think the woodruff
key would get sheared off!

Oh well, this 9000 turbo has 400000 miles on it.
