From memory - haven't done this for several years:
For starters, disconnect the battery to minimize chance of setting off the air bag. Remove the air bag from the steering wheel by removing the two screws from the back side of the wheel. I seem to recall that there was something odd about them, i.e. Torx screws?
Then loosen BUT DO NOT COMPLETELY REMOVE the big nut holding the steering wheel on to the shaft. Now yank the steering wheel off, which may take some major physicality - it's been on there for almost 22 years, right? The reason that you leave the nut on is so when the wheel finally does break loose, you don't bop yourself in the nose (been there, done that) or tear the wires to the clockspring.
