I don't know much about the diagnostic connector, but assume that it's in the "aquarium" under the plastic panel below the windshield.
Ideas: Note that cars with automatic transmission have a safety interlock switch on the transmission that only allows the starter to run when the car is in "Park". This might be going bad on your car. Another possibility is that the starter solenoid is on its way out. First step would be to see if the thin yellow wire to the solenoid is energized with battery voltage when the ignition switch is turned to "start".
