Thanks Steven. I'm a die-hard manual driver but my first Saab was an automatic. It followed a Volkswagon GTI and it had everything against it: four doors, velour interior, automatic transmission but it was a 900T and despite the autobox it was my favourite car to date with the exception of a BMW 2002 I owned twenty years previously.
So I have another question:
The preamble: my 1989 automatic 900T had a Garrett turbo, there was turbo lag but it was still fun; I have a 1988 900TC, manual, and I don't notice the turbo lag; with my 1998 9000CSE, manual, Mitsubishi turbo, no hint of turbo lag, BUT with my current 1996 9000CSE if I have slowed to 25mph for traffic on the highway and hit the gas I find myself waiting for what seems like seconds before things get moving.
The question: is turbo lag more of an issue with the Garrett turbo? Would I be happier with my automatic transmission if replaced the Garrett turbo with a Mitsubishi? Or would a chip swap be the way to get a little more power up front?
