Im prepared this winter to do a thorough replacement of the whole system, (or most.) Evaporator, condenser and compressor all seem to be in fine fettle... but my hoses are all a little leaky, and my drier is a horror show, and i suspect leading to the expansion valve trouble, though it could just be bad parts....
i dont have the original valve.. the one that came with car when i bought it was used (classic blue markings...and was aftermarket itself!) So I am at mercy of aftermarkets...
i am also sitting on all three a/c hoses, two new and one good used (from drier to expansion valve)which i bought preemptively as availability for some are not great, and all my connections look super frozen, so didnt want to have any issues on that end, if i ever did need to replace any a/c elements in a hurry.
My game plan:
1: swap expansion valve in next week or so (have a respite in temps thankfully) and see how far I get this fall and winter and into next spring... Even though my hoses are a little leaky, and the drier is abominable, I was surprised by the readings from my mechanic this spring when he recharged the system by weight... readings showed some moisture in the system, but was getting a very good temp drop and ice cold air, so the system was working well, until this week. I generally, if i can, do my own work, but have them evacuate and recharge system, as I dont trust anything but by weight...
2: if all holds pressure and works well after this valve replacement, I will likely just leave it be....
3: OR i may, if timing works out, replace the drier this winter, and replace hoses as needed...and hopefully not mangle the condenser.... if i do, well then winter project gets a little biggger.
I daily drive this guy, so i cant shut it down too long, thus trying to replace just what needs it.
Oddly, enough my wife is about to buy a9-3 sport combi to replace her 2004 9-5 wagon....(shes missed my old SC ever since I sold it to get into this 9000 aero). which means if she does, maybe i can keep the 9-5 and then give myself some more wiggle room regards repairs on this a/c system!
lets see how this all shakes out!
